Reciprocal Beneficiary: Hawaii
A reciprocal beneficiary is either one of two
persons who have taken the steps required to create a valid
reciprocal beneficiary relationship, which is accomplished when
two qualified persons file a Declaration of Reciprocal
Beneficiary Relationship with the Director of Health.
This relationship can generally be formed by
consenting adults who are legally prohibited from marrying one
another and who are not presently married or in another
reciprocal beneficiary relationship. For example, two
individuals who are related to one another, such as a widowed
mother and her unmarried son, or two individuals who are of the
same gender.
